Storytelling for Environment Justice

Taiwan
Climate Change and Environmental Protection
Audiovisual storytelling is a tool used by grassroots organizations working on social change. It raises public awareness, drives dialogue, and engages communities to enact action. This project aims to provide the general public of Taiwan an understanding of real stories from communities that have suffered by the fatigued environment justice, along with providing a space, using their own language to craft and carry their unique experience and own true stories. Through storytelling, we intend to build and support the power of grassroots change.

Sustainable Development of Tibetan NGOs for E.P.

China
Climate Change and Environmental Protection
As the largest inland salt water lake in China, Qinghai Lake (the Lake) is the final guardian of anti-desertification and ecological preservation of its lower reaches. Tibetan development and ecological environment are interdependent. However, too many human activities are exacerbating the environmental deterioration at the Lake. Experts predict the Lake will eventually evaporate and vanish. Nanjia, a leading Tibetan environmental protectionist, and his team find their 20-year efforts unsustainable. There is a lack of specialists and skills in communication and fundraising. Hence, it is critical to address the sustainability of such Tibetan NGOs as Nanjia’s team to create a new model for nationwide demonstration and promotion. We will invite specialists to hold workshops for volunteers, share their experience with communities, design comic images to tell stories about animals and environmental degradation, and tweet comic stories on social media to raise money for rare animals.

Hack-a-farm Innovation Camp

Indonesia (Vietnam)
Climate Change and Environmental Protection
In 2013, Statistics Indonesia released datum suggesting a decrease of approximately 5 million farmers in the last 10 years – meaning that less and less youth are involved in agriculture. Current non-automated methods of farming prove inefficient and climate change contributes even more to the hard situation. Vietnam farmers also face major problem towards climate change adaptation. While the number technology enthusiasts are growing in Southeast Asia, agricultural applications are not growing in the needed pace. The problem is that not so many events thus far have brought technology enthusiasts to meet farmers to understand and discuss the core problem in order to develop appropriate solutions. We are aiming to create an ecosystem of young tech-enthusiasts and young farmers from agriculture vocational school in a week-long event to determine and solve agricultural problems in both countries.

Brave Girls

Vietnam
Empowering Women and Girls
According to the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs (http://ilssa.org.vn), women in the mountainous highland provinces, particularly in the northern areas of Vietnam, have limited education access due to economic & social disadvantages. For years, those women have been still considered as the most vulnerables. Young women and school girls could have better opportunities to education access, yet their voices and perspectives to critical issues are still underrepresented while their online presence and discussion is either limited or exposed to risks. ‘Brave Girls’ is designed to empower young women & school girls through leadership development, critical thinking, 21st century skills, and civic engagement so that they can actively contribute to social issues and fight for women's rights and gender equality in their communities.

Mekong River Restoration Project

Thailand
Climate Change and Environmental Protection
With 14 dams expected to be built in addition to those already under construction on the Mekong River, assessments conducted by the Mekong River Commission indicate a minimum displacement of at least 75000 people. Multiple mega-construction projects without detailed environmental assessments is a disaster in waiting that threatens not just the food security & water security of the region but with impacts that will threaten the region’s striking biodiversity.Empower the youth from vulnerable communities around the Golden Triangle as “Mekong River Ambassadors” through creation of a unique & sustainable eco-tourist circuit in the region. Build a youth community (currently non-existent) in the region to emphasise the need for transparency & accountability from governments on projects on the Mekong River.Highlight sustainable development  & collective responsibility for the Mekong River to stop unhindered exploitation for immediate needs.

Factors in the Decision to Drop Out of Two Universities in the Philippines

I am exploring the factors that influence students to drop out of two universities through 120 semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis. My objective is two-fold: to shed light on the challenges students face and the aspects that help students persist.

These Southeast Asians inspired President Obama. Now they will meet with him.

They have founded organizations that fight for food security, promote rural development and protect the local environment. They have held government positions, worked as reporters and given university lectures. And they are all younger than 35.
