Jar Thuraya is heritage preservation enterprise that offers different services related to heritage preservation, sustainable development and women empowerment.
It covers different sectors such as Food and Beverage, Agriculture, Education, Rural Activities and Design. Each of these categories is widely developed and expands into services of different kinds.
1. Empower women by re-selling their local home made products (mouneh) through online channels and create for them personal brands by adding their names and villages on the labels of the products. In addition to that, publish their own profiles online, and allow them the opportunity to be known and recognized.
● Give the women a feeling of financial independence and boost their confidence by giving them the needed exposure they strive for in order to reach the market faster.
● Export local products internationally and allow Lebanese expats the possibility to receive a taste of home.
2. Boost rural areas by adding the names of the villages where the products come from on the labels and promote them through various forms of online interactions. In addition to that, publish all the info related to the villages and the various services they offer and create jobs for the local talents.
● Collaborate with Lebanese Wanderers, whose mission is to work on different rural tourism implementations around the Lebanese villages and engage the youth in physical activities along the hiking trails.
3. Organize and host events and cooking activities with the star women around guest houses to teach visitors recipes, and engage them in culinary activities.
● In order to preserve the cycle of traditions, this form of intangible heritage preservation will be the tool to revive the techniques that many of the youth lack.
4. Wecreatenetworkingopportunitiesfortheyouthtoreconnectwith others from the same village. Any Lebanese around the world will be given the opportunity to virtually meet and connect with people that come from the same village as him in order to tighten the relationship between people who have been deprived a soul connection to their lands.
● Through this initiative, people from around the world will be able to learn more the Lebanese villages and connect with long lost family, friends, or natives of the same village.
5. We support local talents by posting about their stories and their merchandise, in addition to that, we encourage plastic free and eco-products so we aim to collaborate with other sustainable institutions and partner with them on projects.
● We aim to build a chain of partners that share our mission and collaborate on projects in which we have the same vision and social impact.

Production and sale of organic green chilli peppers

Our project consists in producing and marketing organic green chilli peppers, an activity in which our Cooperative has proven experience. The project will be carried out in our agro-ecological school-farm which has three (03) hectares of cultivable land, a borehole of 10,000m3 of water, a 2Kwa generator, a 2,000 litre water tank, equipment and tools for market gardening and an electrified housing at a salary, which can accommodate four (04) workers permanently. We have been experimenting with organic green pepper production since February 2019 and it has been very successful and in high demand in Tsévié, Lomé, Cotonou and Accra. Thanks to this financing, we will increase our production from 1/8 of a hectare to 2 hectares, thus increasing our production capacity and satisfying the needs of our customers, who are eager to consume our green chilli pepper, of excellent quality. The total cost of our project is estimated at $8,440.27, will allow us to strengthen our farm with organic inputs, purchase irrigation system of perforated strips for 2 hectares, amortized over 3 years, and prepare the land necessary for production, as well as the payment of maintenance and harvesting costs. This grant will facilitate the creation of two (02) permanent jobs and two internship positions will be opened to train young people in our agro-ecological technique for producing green chillies. These trainees will be recruited for the second phase of the project, after six (06) months.

Conservation of Indigenous Species Native to West Africa

Approximately 75% of the world’s agricultural plant genetic diversity has been lost because of production of high-yielding, genetically uniform plants that have replaced native crops. Therefore, there is a critical need to meet Africa’s food needs while addressing issues of nutrition, food security, poverty, and health by utilizing and conserving nutrient rich indigenous food crops. My long term goal is to contribute to hunger eradication efforts on the African continent by preserving biodiversity of indigenous plants. This will not only provide regional food security, but will promote science literacy, and recruit and educate the next generation of science ambassadors in Ghana and other sub-Saharan African countries. Specific research objective in this proposal was focused on evaluating the genetic diversity of frafra potato populations in Ghana and surrounding sub-Saharan African countries in which this species is cultivated. The proposal included innovative approaches to study traditional subjects while providing hands-on experiential learning experiences for faculty, staff and students at the University of Ghana.
