Establishment of Community Indigenous Seed Banks for Climate Change adaptation and resilience

Kisumu county in Kenya consists of different weather patterns. The County has seven (7) constituencies. Four of these Constituencies are semi-arid while the remaining three are arable lands. Among the four constituencies, two are always affected by floods which sweep away homes and livelihoods. the remaining one is rocky and hard to work on both during the rainy and dry seasons. Poverty is highest in the four constituencies compared to other areas in the region. Women and girls in their attempt to survive through the tough environmental conditions, have engaged in jobs which are male-dominated. There is a loud cry among women involved in a fish business where they are sexually abused and the problem is so rampant that it is now known well as "No sex, no Fish". This has contributed to the high prevalence of HIV infection along the fish landing beaches. Women in sand harvesting and stone crushing which are also environmentally damaging activities, equally undergo abuse, they cannot negotiate the prices; men do the negotiation and only give women and girls what they refer to as "change".

Communicating Public Health

Creating familiarity among journalists and public health advocates can assure more effective media coverage of public health priorities, including vaccine confidence, and other aspects of disease prevention. My world-wide experience as a journalist and public health official as well as experience in these very workshops qualify me to partner with governments, multi-lateral organizations, academics, faith-based institutions, and the business community to strengthen media-public health relationships to mutual benefit of all involved disciplines. While Eastern Africa is specifically cited here, I have experience in conducting this work around the world.

The Laikipia Promise - Girls Education

Expiration: April 23, 2020

I have been serving as a board member of a public school in Laikipia County in Kenya for the last one year. During this time of service, I have organized several motivation talks and mentor ship programs for the schools and the the desire that the pupils have towards education is motivating. However, most of them come from very humble backgrounds and cannot afford the basic needs to keep them comfortable in school.

Some of the most lacking items includes; sanitary towels for girls, books for both boys and girls, lack of feeding program fee which in most cases is less than $3, lack of class materials such as board and chalks among others.

This has led to several cases of avoidable school drop outs which are very heartbreaking. I started a personal initiative to be helping such cases financially but this has become very overwhelming and I just realized I can't do it all alone due to lack of funds.

To ensure that there is continuity and that dreams are not shattered, I have decided to take this a notch higher by expanding the initiative so that I can also have a more diverse activities rather than case in point and random assistant. I have since then adopted "The Laikipia Promise" as my brand towards realizing this and I am in the process of registering it with the Societies and Community based organizations in Kenya.

I therefore require funds to run this and help young leaders and learners achieve their dream and in a environment where they never lack basic needs.

Looking forward for support!!

Thanks a lot

Empowerment of Released Inmates

Expiration: December 31, 2019

We are looking for a sponsor who can help us build and develop a centre that will employ released inmates once they have secured their freedom. Most inmates learn skills and go through training while in prison so as to help them in securing a source of income once they are released. But sad to say no one wants to employ a former inmate for fear of their crimes. Thus these poor people who had been given a hope have their hopes dashed and may resort back to crime. In collaboration with Kenya Prisons Authority we would like to have a Vocational workshop for these former inmates to join and employ their skills once they are released. We will market their products and help them to become self sufficient in life after release.
We look forward to well wishers to join us in this endeavour as we embark on it.
