EY Outreach – A Creative Reach Beyond Limits

Expiration: September 1, 2023

The United States is hugely influential upon the UK through its cultural exports such as music, film, fashion, cuisine, and technology. There are many similarities between the young people from both countries that have increased in recent years by the growing influence and accessibility of social media platforms.

This program aims to explore the universal themes derived from socio-economic and cultural issues affecting young people through their lived experiences, and perceptions, of the Police. This will include subjects such as crime, anti-social behavior, and victimhood. It will seek to view these emotive subjects through both positive and negative experiences.

The program is a joint venture by the US Embassy, West Midlands Police and EY Outreach that will use coaching, shared learning, and lived experiences to transform the lives of young people in Birmingham, and help build a stronger relationship between the community and police. This will be achieved through a culturally competent platform in which open, transparent and transformative dialogue can be encouraged and supported. Using methods of experiential learning and coaching proven by EY Outreach, we will support the most at-risk young people through a journey that provides criminal intervention, mental health support, personal development, and employability-readiness.

This includes a ten-week program utilizing interactive creative arts tools to engage participants in creating their own video tool kit that raises awareness of societal and human rights issues. This will provide a transferrable and informative learning experience that aimed at generating transatlantic dialogue and cultural exchange between young people.

"CHICK LITERATURE, HISTORY AND GENDER RELATIONS: PERMANENCIES AND DISCURSIVE RUPTURES"

This project is to research the notions of violence and pleasure in erotic contemporary best-seller novels written by women and focused on women´s population as primary readership. I intend to continue to proceed the investigation about the novels, by the cultural history view, gender relations and emotions theory, to a historical analysis of discourses and speech in the so-called “chick lit” best seller novels considered porn, the “soft porn” – a growing fictional literary genre in Brazil in the last 20 years, whose main characters are contemporary middle-class women and their major dilemma – in relation to issues of the main addressed subjects and the ways they combine with the ideas about love, pleasure, dreams and life projects and how they affect and also combine with the construction of subjectivities and sensitivities of women. The questioning of the sources will have as a starting point the perception about liberties and the attributed meanings and limits granted to the relationships between the genres, built by the characters, which dilemmas, conflicts, and solutions experienced in the plot. The selection of books will obey the rule of being settled in the list of best sellers or in the average of large print runs of Brazilian sale , since the mid-2000’s when this genre began to emerge in the Brazilian editorial market. Taking into account the issues about edition in Roger Chartier´s studies, I understand that this literature negotiates with the approval of the public who consumes it, in a process of circularity that suits to the reader´s way of thinking and, to a certain extent, working as an influencer in shaping opinions.

Exploring Contemporary art and performance in India

As Fulbright Senior Scholar Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi Exploring Contemporary art and performance in India. As Visiting Professor and Research Scholar exploring ritual and performance at College of Language and Culture Studies at Royal University of Bhutan, Taktse Kingdom of Bhutan. How can one explore Rasa – the aesthetic “feel” within traditional Indian performance and how can this be translated into contemporary performance? How can one explore expressions of face and body (rasa-abhinaya) within contemporary performance? And, finally, how can we envision artistic research as a unique and meaningful way to contemplate South Asian cultures outside of current lenses?  I am a multi-media artist and research scholar on transcultural education at Columbia University and a 2022 Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi. In India, I will conduct academic and practice-based research on traditional and contemporary Indian performance and ritual. Lead practice-based fieldwork to expand my own creative practice in ritual and performance and foster US-Indian collaboration. I will also direct a project documentary to familiarize audiences with contemporary interpretations of Indian performative traditions. http://www.performindia.org
