Mara-Mau-Serengeti Ecosystem (MMSE) Environmental sustainability Project

The school of Tourism Natural Resource Management of Maasai Mara University is implementing a tree planting project as part of the it?s environmental sustainability programme. Close to 700 tree seedlings were planted in January 2015 at 3 different sites within the main campus grounds. Following an assessment by a team from the school a recommendation was made to allocate these seedlings for maintenance to TNRM students. The Narok County where the Maasai Mara University is situated is generally an arid and semi-arid zone. The community largely has no culture of planting and maintaining trees. Pressure on the established pastoralism is forcing many to resort to alternative livelihoods such as charcoal burning. Proximity to Nairobi has ensured a constant reliable market for the charcoal. However, there is no planting to replace the ones cut down. This has led to degraded lands, impoverished soils and bare lands. In an attempt to control this wanton environmental degradation, the school of tourism and natural resources is undertaking a sustainability agenda in the University, with a view to extending it to the entire Narok County, and to the neighbouring Tanzania where the community shares a boundary.
