Digital education tools for underprivileged children in post COVID-19 India.

Expiration: October 2, 2020

COVID 19 is changing the face of education all around the world. Post-Covid words will be very different from what we have experienced. Schools and universities are shifting to digital education because of the pandemic. But this poses a challenge to the students in third world countries as many of them won't be in the possession of computers, smartphones or even televisions to access the digital content of education. A majority of students in India depend on public education and many of the schools are reopening digitally after the summer breaks. Some of the state education board are streaming their classes online and through television channels. The problem is that this initiative won't reach a major section of underprivileged students. The governments are struggling financially due to the pandemic situation and there are limits for them too. As per the current situation in India, the pandemic is meant to get worse and stay for long and children's education can't be neglected.
In this scenario, the BIGning foundation aims to provide digital learning tools like televisions and smartphones to children and their families in need to access the digital lessons and be part of the class even during these difficult times. In some areas like in tribal colonies which does not have electricity, we plan to start basic level development like installing solar panels at homes and providing developing temporary classrooms where they can access the digital lessons. We ought to ensure that no child is left behind and we have to do our part towards it. At the end of the day, it's the smile on the young kids' faces that will keep us moving.

Excerpts of My Letter in TIME Magazine Published November 29TH, 2004 Which Available On Newsstands Monday November 22ND, 2004

Re your special report "Visions of Tomorrow" [Oct. 25]: No single
nation is self-sufficient in today's global society; we need one
another's food, inventions, technology, banking, credit, tourism,
music and fashion. International exchange students help us participate
more fully in a world that is becoming increasingly linked by
communication, transportation and trade. We can no longer be blinded
by prejudice and narrow-mindedness. We can change the world by
overcoming the barriers among people. Then we can leave the 21st
century knowing that we have broken the pattern of divisiveness.

Thank you,
Best Regards,

The Digital Literacies of Indonesian Secondary Students: An Exploration to Inform Their Educators

Expiration: February 12, 2020

This research project addresses a significant educational need in Indonesia to build local knowledge about students’ digital literacy practices and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) use for learning. In partnership with a UNNES teacher educator and English as a Foreign Language scholar, this study employed surveys and focus groups to generate data about how, why, when, where, and to what ends secondary students from Central Java utilize technologies in their everyday lives. The study uses abductive analysis to put existing theories, largely derived from studies conducted in Western contexts, in conversation with the data to identify anomalies and unexpected findings that are unique to the Indonesian context. Findings will be shared with teachers, teacher educators, and policy makers to improve the digital literacy and ICT education for Indonesian youth and with the larger research community to expand the world’s definition of digital literacy.
