Power Up Grant Activity
Expiration: October 29, 2016In the Gambia, Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) is one of the most common forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV) practiced at a prevalence rate of 75% among women aged 15 - 49 (DHS, 2013). It continues to be a violation of the bodily integrity, reproductive health and sexual rights of girls and women. Despite the serious social and economic consequences of the issue, there is widespread acceptance of its continuity by communities due to deep-rooted cultural beliefs, myths and religious misconceptions as the MCIS 2010 revealed that 64.2% of the population supports the practice.
Like many other cultural and traditional practices FGM/C has socio-cultural dynamics and misconceptions that promote it. Therefore, to abolish it requires that the socio-cultural dynamics and misconceptions of the practice be well understood and countered for behavioral change to be accomplished.
Women ¨Sin Lìmites¨
Expiration: September 30, 2017Our challenge is to make visible the successful women in different areas. Our proposal wants to make known new faces and voices, that serve as a reference for others . Because the intelligence and experience does not have gender, but culturally our society has kept the world backwards the knowledge and valuable contribution of women. We have recently seen how cinema and social networks have made an effort to make popular the stories of women scientists, intellectuals or artists, stories, of successful lives that remained hidden for the rest of society. The women have been a social engine in the shade, little recognized.
The challenge of this initiative is to give visibility to the successful work of colombian women, giving other women positive references that serve as inspiration, with this we want to boost their participation in society and in parallel facilitate and promote their incorporation into the colombian labor market.
