Studying Grant

Expiration: November 4, 2017

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing from Bhutan ,one of the countries still considered to be below poverty among the following developed countries around the world.I am a female 29 years old and i am currently working in a museum registered under a Civil Society Organization and have also served in various Non Governmental organization on a voluntary basis.I am currently trying to avail for my masters program in Victoria University in Melbourne for my masters in project management and my intake is in July but i still haven't been able to arrange some financial requirements of the university and since i am a recent exchange program student i was exploring some options to request the US Government for some assistance and i have gone through he alumni network but i am still not sure how to connect and find some financial assistance.I have here by written a small document to support my interest in the field of study that i have selected and also wanted to seek your kind advise.

I am Sherub Zam, 28 years old female from Bhutan.I am positive person with strong academic acumen and an ability to adapt to different environments quickly. I believe in ‘Dream it to be it’ and see myself as an analyst and a thinker with huge appetite for learning, and I love swimming.Second eldest in the family of four siblings, I have been influenced and supported by my family throughout my academic and professional career. With their unwavering support I completed my Bachelor in Computer Applications from Srinivas College of PG Management Studies, Mangalore University, India in Srinivas college of PG.Management and studies.. During my three-year undergraduate course, I studied computer programming, fundamentals of distributed computing, e-commerce, basic electrical science, industrial management and information technology. I also completed a certificate course in aviation management from Kingfisher Training academy in year 2011 through partial sponsorship of Ministry of Labour and Human Resources, Bhutan.

I have been working as an Event Manager at the Folk Heritage Museum of Bhutan under Tarayana Foundation, a Civil Society Organization working on empowering the vulnerable and poor in rural Bhutan, since 2014.Besides curating and managing various events, I also initiate, plan and execute small-scale projects funded by internal stakeholders and donors. Presently, I am working as the Project Coordinator from our museum in a global project called Museum Connect funded by the US Department of State and administered by the American Alliance of Museum in the US. I was in the US recently with 12 other international museum leaders to take kick start the first phase of the project.

Prior to my current job, I worked as a volunteer for three years from 1st April 2010 to 28th November 2012 in a local Non-governmental Organisation called Chithuen Phendey Association that offers awareness, assistance and support to people affected by alcoholism and drug addiction. I also worked as a marketing executive for a private firm called Bhutan Media Services for five months from 1st March till 21st July,2009 and then as a part-time journalist for Bhutan Times, the first weekly newspaper of Bhutan. After that I worked temporarily as an Assistant Returning Officer from March to July 2013, during Bhutan’s second parliamentary elections. I then worked as an Intern in Loden Foundation, an international NGO from August 2013 to july 2014.

I opted to study Master of Project Management mainly due to my passion and interest in this field, and also because my current work requires me to have knowledge and skills in project management. Project management plays a significant role not only in achieving business objectives but also meeting the economic development agenda of developing countries like Bhutan. Any project like infrastructure development, software development, organizational change, research and development, relief effort after a natural disaster, expansion of sales into a new geographic market, ect. require competent project managers to ensure the quality of final product or service, increase productivity of the workforce, and allocate resources efficiently and transparently.

This specialized course, which will train me on fundamentals of project management, principles of project management and conceptualizing, designing, developing, documenting, procuring and maintaining of small and big scale projects or even global projects, project planning and control, and researching methods, will significantly contribute in helping my organization in particular and my country in general perform better in this globally competitive environment. Project management has gained strong influence over many important development sectors around the world and this course would provide me with the ideal opportunity to cultivate my intellectual understanding of project management and help me explore innovative project ideas that can be implemented in my organization. There is huge potential for the museum to initiate socially useful projects but the lack of project management skills among its employee limits it from fully exploiting this potential. The theoretical and practical knowledge gained from this course would allow me to initiate and implement various projects efficiently and effectively, which would also help me to move up my career ladder.

Addressing the dearth of professional project managers in my country, especially women project managers, is another reason that motivated me to take up the course. I intend to close this gap by taking up this course and setting an example to encourage more Bhutanese women to take up project management, and also impart and share what I learn to my colleagues and friends. Moreover, most of the project managers in the country are not trained professionals as they have learned the skills on the job. Many project managers are deputed from other divisions and their primary duties and skills are different from project management.

My decision to study this course abroad is because no institutes in Bhutan offer postgraduate degree in the field of Project Management. Some institutes in India, Thailand and Europe offer courses in project management but I have considered Australia in general and Victoria University in particular as my study destination after much thought and background research. Australia is known globally for its excellent academic quality and innovative education policies. Additionally, it is one of the safest places to live with low crime rates and limited political unrest. Australia warmly embraces the wealth of cultural diversity and social sophistication that international students bring to its campuses and communities.

I have studied in India earlier and have not had good experience there. Unlike Australia, India has high crime rates, is politically volatile and the education system is not progressive and there are no proper policies in place for the welfare of international students. Moreover, I want to break away from the traditional education system that focuses on text books and rote learning, which is prevalent in Bhutan, India and its neighboring countries, to a more progressive system that will provide me with opportunities for research, exploration and discovery, and exposure, both academic and personal.

In Thailand, the Asian Institute of Technology offers Masters of Project Management in Construction. But their course structure was not appealing as it did not include fixed set of modules. The modules are selected and changed in consultation with the academic/thesis advisors. Their website information also did not mention anything in areas like research, which is crucial for learning. Where as, Australia is a prime contributor for research through fascinating discoveries, high quality educational opportunities and international collaboration. Research opportunities, facilities and funding are emphasized in Australia. Moreover, besides the excellent quality of education in Australia, I will get the opportunity to learn and form international collaborations from the diverse and global student body at the university, which is not possible in India and Thailand due to the meagre number of international students. I will get opportunity to work with faculty members, some of whom are highly regarded in their field, and under their guidance and advice I will be able to hone my analytical, problem solving and communication skills which are essential for project managers.

Catolica Lisbon School of Business and Economics in Portugal provides postgraduate degree in Project Management. However, I do not meet the admission criteria for the course which requires me to have prior experience of completing an international exchange or internships outside Bhutan, and also I need to know few foreign languages.

Before choosing Victoria University, I researched on other universities like the Australian National University, The University of Sydney and QUT that offered Master of Project Management course by going through their websites and also asking friends, who graduated from these universities. The units offered and the learning outcomes are similar in all these universities. All these universities provide similar units to enhance knowledge of contemporary project management research and practice, solve complex project management problems, effective communication, leadership, effective management and coordination of project teams. The Australian National University is among the top 20 universities in the world and the top-ranked university in Australia. However, the course fee of AUD 34,000 per year is very expensive for me. The University of Sydney also provides the course but it is also very expensive. According to their website, it is AUD 43,000 per year for the one and half years post graduate course. I then found that QUT and Victoria University also provide the same course at a more affordable cost. From the two, I chose Victoria University mainly because it is reputed for delivering high quality education and is among the top 4% of top universities in the world. And also because Melbourne is ranked the world’s most livable cities by Economist Intelligence Unit for six consecutive years. Besides the quality education system, the good hhealthcare, infrastructure, stability, culture and environment in Melbourne would be conducive for my academic sojourn.

With my range and more than seven years of working experience in different department’s equips me with enough skill, and a postgraduate degree in Project Management, I will become highly employability when I return home after completing my course. The floodgates of opportunity will open for me with the completion of this course. I would get the opportunity to take up higher responsibilities and lead various project teams in my current organization. I would propose for a separate project management division that would look after all the project activities under my leadership. I could also avail opportunities in the ever increasing hydropower construction projects in the country. With the expertise and knowledge, I could take up executive roles like General Manager in the booming infrastructure sector of the country. My employability will not only be restricted to construction projects but I can also work for development projects undertaken by the government and its donor agencies like the United Nations, World Bank, IMF and so on, that require expertise on project management. Once I get enough practical experience I could also try and compete to secure internationals jobs because project managers are high in demand globally. Or else I could also set up my own project management firm in the near future to provide specialized services to local as well as international clients.

A postgraduate degree in Project Management would certainly prepare me to take up more challenging and bigger roles in future. It will also make me perform better and rise in my career, which will then positively impact my personal life too.

Waiting with Great Anticipation for your response.

Thanking you

Observation of Intracellular Trafficking and Membrane Insertion of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis ESAT-6 in Mammalian Cells

ESAT-6 is a 6-kDa secreted protein of Mycobacterium tuberculosis which is proved to be an antigenic target for the cell-mediated immunity of tuberculosis (TB), both in human patients and various animal models. The ESAT-6 enters the cytosol of alveolar cells through a pore in the endosomal membrane. Our study was to observe the membrane insertion and track the intracellular trafficking of ESAT-6 using fluorescence microscopy. To investigate this model in vivo, we labeled G10C and G88C (Single-site Mutations of ESAT-6) with the fluorophores: 7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD), LysoTracker Red DND 99, Alexa 488, Alexa 546. Each labeled G10C/G88C was bound to WI-26 (alveolar cell), showing anticipated fluorescence microscopic pictures. Specific fluorescence indicates the membrane insertion and trafficking of ESAT-6.

Fuelless Generator

In a country charaterised by epileptic power supply, and generators are been used as a constant backup which causes emission of gases to the atmosphere endangering the ozone layer, and with a high cost of attendant cost of putting fuel in the generator for effective power supply. We sought out for ways to ravage this situation after a long hour of brainstorming, we came up with the idea of a fuelless generator, a generator that runs without fuel.

Building a better World

Expiration: July 14, 2017

Hi. My name is Katherine Sanchez, I am a university student and I live in Chimbote, Ancash - Perú . From a very young age I had a dream that I would like to share in a few minutes.

I do not come from an affluent family but my parents left me a great teaching: although we lack many things, it is better to share that little, because there is the happiness. That message resonated so much in my mind that becoming voluntary in institutions that support youth and childhood as RIE (The Educational Imagination Network) The millennials Movement and Church of God of prophecy, was the milestone of my full happiness. I understood above all that the purpose of my life begins when I surrender more of myself (talent, dedication, effort, long hours without sleep ...) to see the people with more opportunities in life.

In 2016, I was awarded with the "Azuline" team the largest competition in Peru organized by the Ministry of Production and the Inter-American Development Bank "Startup-Peru", receiving recognition for the technological innovation we present. Now I feel that the time has come to take a giant step: to be the promoter of a social and technological project. My dream is that through all the profits of AZULINE, be led to the most distant schools in my country in order to increase the skills of children in all fields (professional, personal, work, social, etc.).

Latinomics believes in my dream and in me, so I have been awarded a 50% scholarship for the program called "International Project Manager in Vienna, Austria"; However I still need to complete the other part. So I've set up a fundraising campaign to reach my goal of 4,500 EUROS. In the following link I detail the tangible and intangible rewards for your generous contribution that can range from € 15 to € 1000. Rewards can be negotiable because your support is invaluable.

I say goodbye, thanking for your time for reading my dream and please, I would appreciate it very much if I answered with a positive or negative message to the petition

There is only one way to be happy: to live for others.
