Expiration: September 1, 2017Dear sir/madam,
My name is Oche David Ankeli and I am an alumnus of the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (KL-YES) program 2014/2015. When I arrived my home country, Nigeria, after a successful and life-changing exchange year, I involved myself in community service as a way of giving back to my community. I have completed over one-hundred hours of community service since I arrived Nigeria. Community service has become a priority and a big part of my life because I discovered changing lives and solving problems is my purpose.
My experience with and exposure to advanced education, teaching methods, and learning facilities in the USA inspired me to apply to colleges in the USA in order to further my education and secure a bright future for myself. I got most of my admission decisions in the month of March of which I was granted a spot at my dream and top priority University- The prestigious Drexel University- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bs in chemical engineering. I was awarded a 50% scholarship for tuition and fees at Drexel. And now, I am trying to raise the remaining amount which is about $34000 per year. I have applied for outside scholarships, I have written to senators, I have written to Drexel for more aid but unfortunately, they do not make adjustments to their financial aid packages. I have tried every option there is but all to no avail.
My country, Nigeria, is currently in a state of recession thereby significantly undermining the state of our economy. The currency of Nigeria (Naira) has depreciated enormously now exchanging Naira to Dollar at a rate of N460 to $1 respectively. This has made it impossible for my parents’ finances to cover my costs at Drexel University.
My father was also retired by the Government in 2015 prior to which his salary was not paid to him for 12 months straight. Now, also, his pensions have not been paid since his retirement.
The financial responsibility of my whole family has been placed on my mother who now earns an inconsistent salary of less than $1500 annually based on the Naira to Dollar conversion. Not to mention, I am just one out of five children.
Please if you're reading this, I really don't know where to go from here. This is my last bus stop as my deadline is early June. This opportunity will change my life and it will also help me to change other people’s lives.
I am seeking your help to make my dream of studying at Drexel a reality. I promise not to disappoint. Thank you for taking your time to read this. I eagerly await your response at ankelioche@gmail.com.
Yours sincerely,
Oche
